Following closely in the footsteps of the PowerShot A570 IS, the latest PowerShot A model comes equipped with a 4x, optically stabilized zoom lens. Resolution is up slightly, from 7.1 megapixels to a full 8.0. As with previous models, the A590 sports Canon's DIGIC III processor for improved speed and high-quality images, in addition to improved Face Detection and Motion Detection technologies.
The A590 also provides shooters access to the standard complement of manual modes: aperture and shutter priority, as well as full manual control. Canon has refined this system over several models, and to say that it's a step above the manual functionality seen on most compact cameras doesn't fully capture how much more useful this system is. While it may not replace your DSLR, the A590's full-ranging aperture and shutter-speed values and a simple, intuitive control system makes the package work for those interested in learning photography basics.
More broadly, the Canon PowerShot A590 IS lets users choose from eight shooting modes:
- Easy: The PowerShot at its most basic, this new to the A590 option is a true full auto mode with adjustment for flash function only
- Auto: Users can change flash settings and ISO (Auto or Hi) in this position
- Program: The full range of menu options, including white balance and color and metering modes, are unlocked in Program mode
- Shutter Priority: Conventional shutter priority, in which user selects the shutter speed and the camera calculates aperture value for correct exposure
- Aperture Priority: Conventional aperture priority, in which user selects the aperture value and the camera calculates the correct shutter speed
- Manual: User controls both aperture and shutter speed
- Scene: The A590 comes equipped with a basic list of 12 scene presets
- Movie: Basic video recording mode, with file size options up to 20ps at 640x480; optical zoom is locked during video recording

CANON IXUS 90 IS 10MP: PhP 19,500Canon Digital IXUS 90 IS review : Regardless of the fact that camera manufacturers are disappearing or cooperating, the impressively large offer of digital compact cameras still stands strong. The mutual differences on the other hand are increasingly hard to discover, certainly for the consumer. Resolution, zoom range, format and so on are features we find in every camera. It is not easy for today's consumers to take their pick from the average (online) shop assortment.
Canon IXUS 90IS design digital camera However, camera manufacturers still succeed in 'being different' even if the remarkable feature they develop does not add directly to the quality but instead to the photographic experience or lifestyle. Take a manufacturer like Canon for example. Canon have dominated the design camera segment with their IXUS cameras for years now. And even 1.5 months after the introduction of a few new models on the PMA in Las Vegas, Canon shake up the market again with the introduction of a threesome new IXUS models including the new Canon IXUS 90 IS that I will evaluate in the following review.
10 Megapixel Canon IXUS 90 IS camera The Canon IXUS 90 IS camera has a stylish and a compact trendy body offering 10 Megapixels of resolution. With the help of a 3x optical zoom, unfortunately no 28mm wide angle, Canon's optical Image Stabilizer (IS) with lens-shifting feature, PureColor LCD II and integrated enhanced intelligent software the Canon Digital IXUS 90 is a camera with powerful features packed in a neat and compact size designer housing.
Neat designed digital camera I have mentioned it before but I'd like to say it again. It keeps amazing me that a camera line such as the IXUS is capable of appearing with a new striking design every single time. Many competitors have tried to copy the design and they have developed compact stylish cameras but they have never succeeded in surpassing the IXUS series. The very first concept consisting of a box with a circle (the lens) in the centre is still the base for the IXUS design. The new Canon IXUS 90 IS camera has a neat design with angled elements and lines integrated in the housing, which makes it a distinct creation and in my opinion a very beautiful result.
Canon IXUS 90 IS review Other features such as for instance quality and user's ease are just as important in contributing to the success of a camera. Immediately after the introduction I was able to lay my hands on a full-production model for testing and dig into the ins and outs of this new model. I have had the Canon 90 IS in the office for a short period of time and have tested the camera in practice. Canon zoom lens with Image Stabilizer The Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS features a brand new 5x optical Image Stabilizer zoom lens, delivering a greater zoom reach than any previous Digital IXUS. Thanks to a comprehensive redesign by Canon’s optical engineers, the lens has a new four-group configuration incorporating UA (Ultra-high refractive index Aspherical) lens elements. UA elements help to provide the gain in zoom power, and ensure that a compact size and straight optical pathway are maintained, for easy usability and optimum image quality.
Optical Image Stabilizer The Canon IXUS 970 IS optimises performance with its enhanced optical Image Stabilizer (IS). The lens-shift type IS improves on the systems used in previous Digital IXUS models, now delivering a 4-stop advantage, an increase of 1 stop. The extra stop allows photographers to use shutter speeds twice as long when shooting hand held, and obtain blur-free shots. The enhanced IS also reduces the blur caused by camera shake when shooting at the telephoto end of the camera’s 5x optical zoom improves performance in low-light, enabling shots in conditions where no shot would have been possible before. This enhanced low-light capability is aided by improvements to the camera’s auto focus; AF is now capable of achieving focus in conditions of up to approximately 1 stop darker.
Canon IXUS 970 IS Design Building on the Digital IXUS ‘perpetual curve’ design, the Canon IXUS 970IS slopes gently back towards the grip. Its two-tone finish gives a precise contrast of matte silver with muted gloss and glossy metallic, for an elegant sheen. The overall effect is one of understated individuality, complementing the camera’s discreet photographic power.
Motion Detection technology Activated in High ISO Auto, Canon’s intelligent Motion Detection Technology works to eliminate motion blur. When camera shake or moving subjects are detected, the system automatically provides an ISO boost between ISO 80-800 - counteracting motion blur to improve action shots and night snaps, without compromising shots where no ISO boost is needed. The technology intelligently combines inputs from Face Detection Technology, the optical Image Stabilizer, changes in scene brightness and changes from frame to frame to identify the subject and detect motion.
Face Detection technology Equally comprehensive is Canon’s approach to Face Detection Technology. The Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS includes Face Select & Track, which allows you to select a single face from a crowd of up to 35 detected faces. The optimum focus, exposure, flash and - for the first time - white balance will then be set for that face, tracking the subject as they move around the frame.
Red-Eye correction Canon’s Red-Eye Correction draws on Face Detection Technology to eliminate red-eye from photographs. Whenever a face is detected in a shot, red-eye is checked for. It can either be removed automatically whilst shooting or in playback mode. New AF Point Zoom allows the photographer to magnify the AF frame when the shutter button is pressed half way, so that facial expressions can be checked before shooting.
Canon DIGIC III image processor As well as powering features such as Face Detection Technology, Canon’s DIGIC III image processor enables quick response times and fast buffering speeds. The processor also incorporates advanced Noise Reduction Technology for excellent image quality at high ISO settings.
PureColor LCD II screen The Canon IXUS 970 IS is made for intuitive use. From the moment the camera is powered up, the 230,000 dot high resolution 2.5” PureColor LCD II screen provides an easy way to frame up shots and navigate the easy-use menu system. PureColor LCD II offers a number of benefits over conventional LCD screens, including improved colour contrast for enhanced visibility, a wide viewing angle for easy shooting and instant image sharing, anti-glare coatings for viewing under bright light and anti-scratch coatings. Additional photo framing options are provided by the camera’s Optical Viewfinder (OVF). The Canon IXUS 970IS includes a Multi Control Dial for the first time in the range. This wheel enables the user to change camera settings and scene modes quickly, as well as offering intuitive navigation of menus and convenient image browsing in playback.
Canon Digital IXUS 970IS Scene modes A host of features enables users to enhance their shooting options. Users can choose from a range of 18 shooting modes, including Special Scene modes that automatically optimise camera settings for common shooting subjects. The Canon Digital IXUS 970 IS features new Sunset scene mode for the optimum capture of this tricky subject. Movie options include Long Play (LP) mode, which uses only half the memory of standard movies, and Time Lapse movie for the creation of fun and atmospheric accelerated film clips.
Canon IXUS 970IS Menu features Several menu features also let users manipulate their images in-camera, without the need for computer software. The Trimming function offers image trimming to predetermined sizes. This function is integrated with Face Detection Technology - if several faces are detected in frame users can jump between faces to create instant trimmed portraits. The Image Resize function enables users to create smaller image files by reducing the number recording pixels in larger images. The original image can then be deleted in order to save space on the memory card, leaving the new file an ideal size for e-mailing and uploading to the web.
